Latest Underground News

Hello again! Just a quick update on what’s been going on beneath The Old Mill over the last week…
On Tuesday Les & Pete (The Beer Jukebox) played to a packed room. They are generating quite a following now. If you haven’t been down to see their act then Tuesday nights in your diary soon! I’d recommend booking as the room is a bit on the cosy side! Just drop us an email or Whatsapp us here:

The Beer Jukebox

On Wednesday we had the second of our “ERUnplugged” sessions since lockdown, with Jono Harrison performing on both guitar and keyboard. A great night; for some videos take a look at our YouTube channel here. Jono’s performance gave us chance to test-drive our new PA system indoors, sounding good…and also allows us to pipe the music to all room!
There will be regular “ERUnplugged” events on Wednesdays, mostly fortnightly, see website for more details

For sometime we have been considering stocking locally produced Kingscote Wines, and this week we finally release our range of bottled wines from the local vineyard. We have five wines which are sold by the bottle: prosecco-style Brut (white & Rose), Bacchus and oak-aged Charmat Bacchus, and a champagne style Brut.
It would appear we might currently be the only establishment in East Grinstead stocking Kingscote Wines (except the vineyard itself!) so come and check it out.

Our range of Kingscote Wines

Finally we have now become a verified Untappd venue. Untappd is a mobile app that allows you to check in different beers, and different bars and find out about local bars and events wherever you are. Being a verified venue allows us to publish a real-time menu of our cask, keg and ciders…with more menus to come! Find out more here
In the meantime here is a sample of what you will see:

As you can see, a busy week..and that’s without serving you some great beers, ciders, and Sussex gins!
More news coming soon but in the meantime don’t forget, ERGin of the Week (#GOTW), our free “bandERillas” on Sundays and “ERgin” night on Fridays. Ta Ra!

Fabelhaft!!!

Thanks to everyone that came to our OktobERfest at the weekend. We had a blast! There were a few hiccups with the supply of some things such as the Pretzels and two of the four acts cancelled for health reasons (not Covid!), but on the plus side we did not run out of German beer as we did last year and the weather was “kind” to us.
BIG thanks go out to Steve & Nella who manned the BBQ tirelessly for the whole weekend! To
ALL the staff (Dan, Fi, Jo, David, Sarah, Lisa and Steve) for keeping the beer flowing and for the entertainment on Saturday night (you had to be there!). Also thanks to James McClusky for filling in for Toulah on Sunday afternoon. Our good wishes go out to both Toulah and Molly and we hope they have a speedy recovery.
Here’s a few pics of including our “framed” prize entrants (winner to be announced!):

Finally here’s a video to sign off with…here’s to Next Year!!!

News from the Basement…

Things have been pretty hectic below ground since the pandemic paused for breath; table service was hard work for all the staff and we are relieved to be back to bar service. With the return to “normal operating procedures” we have started to re-introduce some of the things that we had initiated in our first year.

We had our first post-covid quiz on Thurs 9th September and we have our second one scheduled for Thurs 14th October, all being well these will continue on the 2nd Thursday of each month. As well as a £20 bar voucher, the winner gets to hold the ER Quiz Trophy for the month…prestige or what! It’s up to 6 per table and £1 per person (which goes to St Catherine’s). Ping us an email if you want a table.

ERGin night is back on Fridays; it’s a free mixer with every double gin!

We have also re-introduced “ERGin of the week”. Each week we have a different gin will be priced at £4 for a single and £7 for a double; so if you can’t decide which of our extensive range of Sussex gins to have, then just select the “ERGin of the week”!

On the music front, we already have Les & Pete AKA The Beer Jukebox (or if you listen to Les “The Average Shite Band”!!). They play every Tuesday night from 7.30pm, entry is free! If you haven’t seen them then you don’t know what you are missing!

On Wednesday 29th September, we have three of local band “The Bag Full of Hats” performing as “The Three Hats”. Dave, George and Pete will be playing some favourite tunes as well as some of George’s own compositions. Remember if you wear a hat on the night you will get £1 off of your first drink!

If you want to get aHEAD get a HAT!!!

All being well, we will be looking to organise regular music nights with local artists…keep an eye on our facebook and Instagram pages:

Finally to wrap up this newsletter we are holding the 2nd annual Engine Room OktobERfest on the 16th/17th October.
You can find all the details here
Remember it’s all about the fun and, as with last year, we will be coming round taking pictures and a prize will we awarded to the person, or persons, looking like they are having the most fun!!!
A few samples from last year:

PS: if there are any spelling or grammar mistakes it’s because Lisa wasn’t around to check it for me 🙂

Get your HATS out!

Until now we have restricted our indoor live music to the The Beer Jukebox, who have a regular slot every Tuesday night at 7.30pm. We feel that now might be a the right time to start having some other local acts. To test the water, so to speak, we have three members of local group, “A Bag Full Of Hats”, Dave, George and Pete, performing as ” The Three Hats” on Wednesday 29th September at 8pm.

As their name suggests, “The Hats” like to wear hats so we are offering a pound off the first drink to anyone that wears a hat on the night..so dig out that headgear and come on down!!
